The film tells the story of the Kims, a poor family living in a cramped semi-basement apartment in Seoul. The family, consisting of father Ki-taek, mother Chung-sook, and their children Ki-woo and Ki-jung, struggle to make ends meet. One day, Ki-woo's friend, a university student, recommends him for a tutoring job with a wealthy family, the Parks. Ki-woo poses as a university student and is hired as an English tutor for the Parks' young daughter.
