A firmware fix is a modified version of the printer's operating system. Once installed, it disables the chip check, meaning the printer will always report 100% toner levels regardless of the actual cartridge status. This allows users to refill original cartridges by drilling holes rather than buying expensive new units.
Custom firmware is designed to overwrite the printer's original logic. Once installed, it ignores chip signals, allowing users to refill existing cartridges or use cheaper "chipless" replacements indefinitely.
