The phrase has evolved. Initially, it referred to physical exhibition spaces in Soho and Covent Garden during the 1970s. Coleman’s first major solo show, "Girls, Grit, and Grace" (1974), was a watershed moment. It moved photography out of the art gallery elite and into the coffee shops and record stores frequented by the youth.
