At its core, Kadhal Desam is a story of two contrasting young men. Divya (Vineeth) is a wealthy, carefree college student from an upper-class family, while Surya (Abbas) is a middle-class boy from a village, burdened by responsibility and ambition. The film’s narrative genius lies in not immediately making them friends; instead, it orchestrates a bitter rivalry fueled by misunderstanding and, more importantly, by the machinations of a cynical headmaster who believes that "poor and rich cannot be friends." The story takes a dramatic turn when the two rivals fall in love with the same woman, the kind and compassionate Divya (Tabu).
