The bus let her off at the bend by the well; she climbed down the softened steps and felt, all at once, the old gravity of the place. Names rose from her memory the way names do in sleep: neighbors’ faces, the brittle gossip of the market, the exact tilt of the baker’s stoop. The village seemed smaller than she remembered and older in a way she could not place — as if everyone there shared a private calendar with pages missing.

In this paper, we will explore the ways in which a Mother Village can both invite and enable sinful behavior, while also providing a sense of comfort and security to its inhabitants. We will examine the tensions between the nurturing and protective aspects of a Mother Village, and the ways in which these tensions can sometimes lead to a culture of complacency and moral compromise.
