The story is divided into two distinct halves. The first half follows (Hrithik Roshan), an aimless, privileged, and confused young man from Delhi who has no direction in life. After impulsively joining the Indian Military Academy (IMA) on a friend's dare—and subsequently quitting because he cannot handle the discipline—he realizes his lack of purpose is his greatest weakness. He rejoins the army with a new resolve.
