: Offended, Shani Dev subjects the king to a grueling seven-and-a-half-year period of extreme hardship (known as Sade Sati ). During this time, the king loses his wealth, kingdom, and even his limbs, eventually being reduced to a manual laborer in a different city .
As his period of Sade Sati draws to a close, Lord Shani appears to the King. Impressed by Vikramaditya’s patience, humility, and lack of bitterness, Shani restores his limbs and grants him a boon. Vikramaditya, showing true greatness, asks Shani not to put anyone else through such severe suffering. Shani explains that the suffering was necessary to burn away his ego and that he will be more lenient toward those who read or listen to this story (the Shani Mahatmya ) with devotion.
